The Nook Mentorship
The Mentorship Program
The main goal of the Nook Mentorship Program is to provide Nook children with a trusting, responsible, and caring youth mentor. Recruiting volunteers with the ability to give guidance and practical, intelligent advice, the Nook Mentorship Program strives to engage children by helping them find their own ways to overcome challenges and create a positive influence in their lives. Based around individuals needs, interests, hobbies, personality and skills, the mentorship program ensures that relationships will be “built to last”, as long term friendships have been shown to have the largest positive impact on children.
The role of the mentor consists of (but is not limited to):
• Engaging children in arts/literacy/sports activities
• Increasing children’s confidence
• Improving academic skills
• Validating children’s realities
• Broadening children’s skills and interests
• Working diligently against stereotypes
• Increasing children’s awareness of community/environmental responsibility
• Increasing children’s awareness of current events
• Increasing children’s awareness of human rights
• Having fun!
