The Nook Suspension Help Program

Help for Parents dealing with Out-of-School Suspensions

The Nook Suspension Help Program provided fifteen days of support in 2007. The program was created in January 2006 in response to concerns voiced by local parents and guardians, among others, whose children had received out-of-school suspensions.

Taking a day off work is a serious setback for parents struggling to make ends meet, and we found that children were need of an educational environment in which to creatively discuss, explore and improve their behavior. The Nook Suspension Help Program includes literacy, arts and recreation activities that develop age-appropriate awareness concerning issues commonly leading to suspension; violence, vandalism, theft, bullying and inappropriate conduct.

The Program also includes a healthy lunch and time outdoors, building children’s respect for themselves and the world around them. Nook Staff are also available to assist parents in meeting with school administration, letter writing, appealing suspensions and accessing necessary information regarding their child’s education and other forms of advocacy.

Please call us as soon as you are aware that your child has been suspended from school if you would like to access our Suspension Help Program
