With the Untitled Ensemble
From fanciful flute, bold bassoon, vicarious viola, odd oboe, bantering bass clarinet, cantankerous cor anglais, cackling clarinet…this show will feature a ravishing variety of instruments and styles. From an improvisatory bass clarinet solo by Emily Suzanne Shapiro available ONLY on the streamed version of the show, to Sylvia Glickman‘s “Antigone Speaks”, featuring a theme based on an 8th century Byzantine Hymn by the first female composer on record, Kassia, and spoken parts comprised of poetry from both Sophocles and Kassia.
When and how to listen?
We will be playing outside the George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre on:
- August 26th at 4:30pm
- September 10th at 4:30pm
You can come out in person or watch by clicking on the youtube videos below from the comfort of your own home, or on your phone or other mobile device. This performance is free to watch!
Some of our content will be available ONLY through watching the livestream, such as the improvisatory piece by Emily Suzanne Shapiro!
You can watch the livestream AND come out in person if you like! Our repertoire will be slightly different between the two shows, so we recommend listening to both for sure!
What is the Untitled Ensemble?
The Untitled Ensemble is a chamber music project that strives to explore lesser known historical and current chamber music with an emphasis on works by womxn and non-binary people.
This project also strives to create new and fluid groups of musicians to match the repertoire of each show, creating a meeting place and a resource for musicians who want to play chamber music, but do not have an established ensemble. Our goal is to foster collaboration and create new ensembles who may or may not continue to exist beyond their beginnings within the untitled ensemble.
Who is the Untitled Ensemble?
The Untitled Ensemble is made up of a group of freelance musicians who want to play music by western classical composers who have been ignored/marginalized historically, such as black, brown, asian, women, and queer composers.
We welcome opportunities to collaborate, and are very excited to be playing at George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre! We’re also extremely grateful to the Canada Council for the Arts for supporting this project!
