About GCNC

Located at 50 Sousa Mendes St in the Junction Triangle neighbourhood, George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre (GCNC) is a 7,000 square foot facility devoted to community use in Toronto’s West End. We were proud to open in May of 2019.

George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre is here to provide exceptional programming and build community-based resources with a special interest in children, youth, families and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Home of LOFT Kitchen Social Enterprise Café and The Nook Children’s Program.

Our centre provides a space where children and youth can grow up stimulated, valued for their unique strengths, and exposed to endless possibilities. We pride ourselves on providing a safe space where gender roles are challenged, mental health is a conversation, and the natural world is respected – A space full of the best parts of life!

About George Chuvalo

George Chuvalo, a Canadian icon, ranked among the world’s top ten heavyweights for much of his career. The son of Croatian immigrant parents who worked in the slaughterhouses of west-central Toronto, George Chuvalo is uniquely rooted in the Junction community where local residents petitioned to have our new community centre named after him. Completed in late Spring 2019, the opening of George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre was an important event in our community’s history and a vibrant, inclusive and memorable celebration. The opening honoured George Chuvalo’s life, including the 18 years he spent talking about the loss of four immediate family members to substance use, to advocate for drug prevention among young people across our country. George Chuvalo is a local hero.

About the Junction Triangle

GCNC is proud to be a part of the Junction Triangle neighbourhood, which is an area bordered by railways.

The “triangle” shape of the neighbourhood is formed by the three sets of railroad tracks on the north, west, and east sides:  The CNR/CPR mainline to the west, Metrolinx GO Transit Barrie line to the east, and the CPR east-west railway lines to the north. Dundas St. and Dupont St. account for its northern and southern boundaries, with Bloor St. providing a midline.

The area is known for its vibrant community cohesion, rich history and a mix of modern and industrial architecture. Bike paths, art studios, collaboration, good eats and great coffee – this neighbourhood has it all!

West Toronto Railpath

GCNC will be neighbours with the West Toronto Railpath bike path. The path runs from Cariboo Avenue, just north of Dupont Street West in the Junction Neighbourhood going south past Queen towards Liberty Village. The path serves to re-connect Parkdale, Roncesvalles, The Junction, High Park, Brockton, Beaconsfield, Liberty, Trinity- Niagara, and Dundas West neighbourhoods.

The Railpath has also become a vehicle of community organization through groups such as the ‘Friends of West Toronto Railpath‘ which encourages members to get involved in environmental clean-up projects and other betterment initiatives.
